Description

Feingold says Bush has bunker mentality The Capital Times President Bush's impassioned defense of the war in Iraq during Tuesday night's news conference suggests that a "bunker mentality" is developing in the White House, says U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis. "I'm concerned that the president is getting deeper and deeper into a bunker mentality, defending an operation that really was not properly justified," Feingold said. Feingold said he is "very troubled" that Bush continued to justify the war on the basis of Iraq's alleged links to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and that country's possession of weapons of mass destruction. Feingold noted that investigators have been unable to confirm such links and that U.S. troops in Iraq have failed to turn up any weapons of mass destruction. The president "refuses to admit the implications of the lack of connections between 9/11 and Saddam Hussein. The fact that he is continually searching for other justifications suggests a stubbornness that is, in theory, attractive, but in reality is dangerous," Feingold said.
