Description

Those who wish to write the political obituaries of all the losing 2006 candidates should ponder this first: of the last nine Presidents, none retired undefeated and only two entered their first Presidential campaign without a defeat (both Carter and Ford had not lost before the 1976 race.) John F. Kennedy lost the 1956 Vice Presidential election (yes it was a convention election) to Estes Kefauver. LBJ lost the 1960 nomination to JFK. Nixon lost both the 1960 election and the 1962 California Governor's race. Reagan lost the 1968 and 1976 GOP nomination fights. Bush lost the 1964 and 1970 U.S. Senate races in Texas, plus the 1980 Presidential nomination battle. Clinton lost a House race in 1974 and re-election for Governor in 1980. George W. Bush lost a House race in 1978.
