Description

Treasurer Tim Cahill’s gubernatorial campaign sent out a mass solicitation to Beacon Hill lawmakers today seeking donations in an apparent violation of state campaign finance law. Cahill’s campaign sent the missive to senators and members of the state House of Representatives asking them to donate and “help me end March on the right note.” The e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by the Herald, asked for donations of anywhere from $25 to the $500 maximum. State campaign finance rules bar public officials or candidates from soliciting political donations using state resources and prohibit politicking inside government buildings. “This is a violation and I think there should be an investigation and he should have to pay fines,” House Republican leader Rep. Bradley H. Jones (R-N. Reading) said. “If any money has come from any of these illegal solicitations, he should have to give it back.”
