Historic Overview

The Republicsons Party was a very conservative political party that ran a slate of candidates in Iowa in 1954. It was formed on 8/4/1954 (Council Bluffs Nonpareil, 8/5/1954). Because the name of the party was so similar to the Republican Party, a few thousand votes were invalidated because the canvassers noted that straight ticket Republicans also voted for the Republicsons candidates. The state legislature passed a law in 1955 that prevented a new political party from choosing a name so similar to that of a major party.
