Historic Overview

Second Vermont Republic http://www.vermontrepublic.org/ Vermont Commons:Voices of Independence http://www.vtcommons.org/ Second Vermont Republic (SVR) is a secessionist group within the U.S. state of Vermont which seeks to return to the formerly independent status of the Vermont Republic (1777–91). The Independence Day Party platforms include pulling the Vermont National Guard out of all wars, shutting down Vermont Yankee, giving more power to local schools. More controversial platforms include stopping financial aid to Israel and reverting away from capitalism, but above all else, seceding from the United States. In January 2010 nine Vermonters announced they were planning to run for governor, lieutenant governor and seven seats in the state Senate on a Vermont secession platform. The candidates did not organize a formal political party organization but are running as individuals under the “Vermont Independence Day Party” label. image://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/GreenMtBoys.jpg
