Description

"A specter is haunting America, and it is not socialism and certainly not communism. ... It is the specter of our nation ruled by the extreme Christian right, who would make the United States a 'Christian nation' where their version of God's law supersedes all human law – including the Constitution. "That, more than any other force in the world today, is the immediate, profound threat to our republic." And so begins "The Baptizing of America," a book by Rabbi James Rudin, senior inter-religious adviser for the American Jewish Committee. Rudin makes the case in his book that Christian conservatives – defined here as activist-minded evangelical Protestants and their allies -- have co-opted the national debate on social policy. They have done this through a powerful network of allies and grassroots strategies to insert their theological positions into politics and policy-making at local, state and national levels, in all aspects of American life -- from bedroom to board room, from public school systems to end-of-life issues.
