Description

NEW YORK -- Korean War veterans, high school bands and a handful of protesters opposed to the U.S. occupation of Iraq marched up Fifth Avenue on Tuesday to mark Veterans Day. "Today some of our brave young men and women ... are overseas in Iraq and in Afghanistan continuing the fight, continuing the war that was started on the streets of New York back on 9/11, and they're there to make sure that doesn't happen again," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said before the wreath-laying ceremony that kicked off the march. Though the turnout appeared sparse, Sen. Charles Schumer said it was larger than in some recent years because so many service members are currently in harm's way in Iraq. "Like in every generation, we have brave young men and young women who are willing to serve us, to sacrifice for us and ultimately, if called upon, to give their lives for us," he said.
