WASHINGTON, DC—The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum welcomes the retraction of recent public statements about Hajj Amin al-Husayni, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem during World War II and the Holocaust. The historical facts are clear. Al-Husayni was a vicious antisemite and actively supportive of Nazi Germany’s efforts to annihilate world Jewry. He sought to inspire Muslim men to serve in Axis military and auxiliary units and advocated the murder of Jews.
However, there is no doubt that the “Final Solution” would have occurred with or without his support. The responsibility for the Holocaust belongs to the Germans, their allies, and their collaborators. To indicate otherwise is not responsible history.
