UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM WELCOMES NEW CHAIRMAN OF UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL COUNCIL AMBASSADOR STUART EIZENSTAT

Allan M. Holt to Continue as Vice Chairman; Howard M. Lorber to Remain on Council

WASHINGTON, DC — The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum welcomes the presidential appointment of Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat as Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, the Museum’s governing board.

“Stuart Eizenstat played a seminal role in the establishment of the Museum and has spent decades working to secure restitution for Holocaust survivors,” said Museum Director Sara J. Bloomfield. “Serving in five presidential administrations, he has relentlessly pursued these negotiations to achieve some measure of justice for survivors after their unimaginable loss and suffering. In recognition of his exceptional commitment to the survivors and the cause of Holocaust memory, he was awarded the Museum’s highest honor, the Elie Wiesel Award, in 2021. It is fitting that Ambassador Eizenstat, who was a part of the Museum’s founding, is now assuming the chairmanship as we embark upon the Museum’s next chapter.

“The Museum is deeply grateful to outgoing chairman Howard Lorber for his dedicated service to the institution over the past five years,” continued Bloomfield. “Under his leadership, the Museum made great strides in advancing its strategic priorities, including building its global profile, expanding access to its collections, and advancing its educational outreach throughout the United States and worldwide. His unwavering commitment to honoring the memory of the victims and stengthening Holocaust education was critical, particularly during this time of rising Holocaust distortion and antisemitism. We look forward to Howard’s continued service on the Council.

“We are also extremely gratified that Allan Holt, a son of two Holocaust survivors who has been actively involved with the Museum over many years and has played such a pivotal role in guiding the institution as vice chairman, will continue to serve in that capacity. Allan has led our Strategic Advancement Committee, ensuring the growth of the Museum’s reach and impact as well as securing its future. He is an exceptionally committed leader,” continued Bloomfield.

A federal, nonpartisan educational institution, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum serves as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust dedicated to ensuring the permanence of Holocaust memory, understanding, and relevance. Through the power of Holocaust history, the Museum challenges leaders and individuals worldwide to think critically about their role in society and to confront antisemitism and other forms of hate, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity.
