Confronting the Holocaust: American Responses
2014 Commemoration Resources Now Available Online
WASHINGTON, DC—Each year, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum leads the nation in the Days of Remembrance, established by the US Congress to commemorate the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust as well as the millions of non-Jewish victims of Nazi persecution. The 2014 Days of Remembrance is April 27–May 4, and the Museum has designated Confronting the Holocaust: American Responses as the theme for 2014 observances. A free resource guide is now available through the Museum’s website for individuals and organizations planning to hold Days of Remembrance ceremonies.
The Museum’s Planning Guide and Resources for Annual Holocaust Commemorations provides historically accurate and engaging resources that will enable community, military, religious, educational, and civic institutions nationwide and overseas to hold Holocaust remembrance observances.
“This year’s Days of Remembrance theme explores America’s response to two pivotal points in Holocaust history—the spring 1939 refugee crisis and the deportation of Hungarian Jews five years later,” says Kristine Donly, the Museum’s director of national planning. “This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide. These events cause us to reflect on America’s actions during the Holocaust and how we should respond to genocide today.”
Copies of the Museum’s CD/DVD planning guide can be obtained by filling out the request form. Many of the resources are also available online. Select resources are available in Spanish.
A living memorial to the Holocaust, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity.
